[ The roar and rumble of the ship, combined with those words, is enough to cause alarm, naturally.
But alarm will unbalance them, won't it? Muddying up that connection that is otherwise clear and strong, like a well-established armatus. And, well, it's all downhill from there, he knows.
So he's got to think about this in a different light; focus on the calmness to those words rather than their meaning. Mikazuki doesn't have any desire to die, does he? So surely he'll steer the ship in a way that avoid that outcome. In that, Sorey can trust.
Ignoring the still-steady slam of his heart against his ribs, then--] Well, now that we know what we're up against...
[ Keeping calm and balanced. It's what Mikazuki would do too, content to work by himself at the forefront of an effort, no matter what he has to endure. It's less distrust for Sorey and more just what he defaults to in the scheme of things — all of his comrades had always put their bodies on the line for what they needed and had to do, Mikazuki simply puts his body on the line for them. For all his focus on fighting as a means to an end, it's selfless.
It's strange to feel someone's breathing more than hearing it, but it helps. Giving the controls a touch, Mikazuki sets his posture. ]
Let's go.
[ The ship begins to stop coasting and angles more into a crash against the atmosphere, swallowed by its resistance in a blinding flash of heat and smoke. It seems to take forever to grind through, the shaking and noise heightening to a deafening level.
At the end of it, though, there's a color daze. Red and black to white and green, a dramatic shift that has them careening down through cloud-cover towards a sea so blue it aches. ]
[ Said with a firm resolution, devoid of fear; the kind of sound that chases away doubts, as Sorey actively, consciously does in this moment. As well he should, too. After all, he can feel Mikazuki’s confidence; his -- is it excitement? There’s a steady thrum through their connection he isn’t sure is attributed to one or the other, but it’s there nonetheless.
At that purposeful, deliberate angling into the atmosphere and all the jarring, deafening things that result, his features tighten all the same. Hands still on the controls, eyes dart from all the console’s myriad, mysterious lights to the placid figure at his side mastering them all. There’s a strange shift in color palette as they break through the clouds, and--
Oh wow.
Sorey’s eyes are wide, back unknowingly off the seat as the rest of him inches toward its edge. There’s a bit of laughter -- a definitively-two-beat, open-mouthed ‘ha ha!’ sort of sound that escapes him. ]
We made it!
[ Not as though he didn’t expect to, but... for a minute there it did get pretty rough, he won’t lie. And knowing what they were up against, and what could have happened? Sorey feels pretty fortunate. (Mikazuki’s experience may vary, of course; but his co-pilot here is a first-timer so this is all pretty fantastic.) ]
[ Now that they've broken through to the planet, there's things to account for that hadn't been in the vacuum of space — wind and gravity, the beating of sunshine down through the windshield. So Mikazuki doesn't let up on his intensity as he pushes the craft down through the new resistances. ]
Yeah, it is.
[ He's always thought so, though he'd never really had the luxury of stopping to admire it. Everything he feels now is run-off from Sorey, but he doesn't mind.
Before long, he's wheeled the craft down in a clearing near one of Wyver's many bodies of water. It'll be easier to navigate from there. Landing the ship is almost gentle in comparison to the ride itself, letting him display a soft touch, even if it's influenced by the machine. Once resting, he sets the controls and unbuckles himself to approach Sorey. ]
Here. [ A hand. ] Watch when you stand.
[ Even in a space ship, getting your land legs can take a bit. ]
[ In his time here, Sorey’s crash-landed (while largely asleep) once, and used teleporters the rest of the time, completely avoiding the trip down to the planet, so this? This is a first, and he’s glued to it like a history book, unblinkingly watching it play out before his eyes.
There are mountains and valleys; trees and rocks; lakes, rivers, and streams – and in a way, it... it almost reminds him of home. Emotion bubbles up inside him, surging and immense fondness with only a pinch of melancholy homesickness for the places he used to know, supposedly lost to the Storm. He still believes they’re out there somewhere, naturally, and falling asleep only further forged that. But until he can get back there with all his comrades in tow, well... at least this world is doing its best to impersonate all of them.
It’s no surprise, then, that Sorey doesn’t appear to notice they’ve touched down until Mikazuki is standing before him, offering a hand. Then reality snaps back into place like a puzzle piece. ]
R-right. [ He sputters as he forcibly redirects his focus, perhaps not properly allocating for exactly how weird it’ll feel when he stands again, taking that hand and—
--wait why are his legs rubber?!
It’s a little too late for questions like that, sadly. Sorey winds up with both hands on Mikazuki’s shoulders from all-too-close a distance for just a second, muscles in his quads and calves trembling like he just finished leg day. ]
[ All those emotions pitch against something stark and empty, the space where a home would be had it not been torn away, right through his fingers. That brief, final pang of homesickness is a feeling Mikazuki doesn't recognize for what it is. It forms like the surge of a wave and pulls away just as quickly, washed through him without truly finding a place to stick, to overcome for more than a fleeting moment.
Which is why he can focus on what's tangible versus what never has been for him, things like hands on his shoulders. On instinct, he reaches out to steady Sorey there, looking down between them. ]
Yeah. If you're not used to going from space to gravity, it can end up like this. Are you okay?
[ A deliberating hum lingers in his throat. With that, his gaze flicks back up, no worse for wear. ]
It depends, but... [ Well, they're on the ground now, so even if Sorey does almost take a spill, it should be fine with him looking out for him still, right? ] You can hang onto me for a while if you want.
[ There's a nod in reply, and a bit of a determined furrow in Sorey's brow. He's not unrealistic, (mostly), but he is a Proud Bean™, so he will let go once he willfully forces his legs to move properly.
...only to grab back onto a shoulder after a couple steps down the exit ramp, lest he roll like a black, white, and blue feathery katamari and faceplant into the dirt.
Once he's got both feet back on solid ground, however, there's a moment taken to just breathe; one where he realizes just how thankful he is that they didn't burn up in the atmosphere. After exhaling audibly--]
I really owe you one for getting us down here safe!
[ Once it's guaranteed that Sorey isn't going to take a topple down the ramp and make the top ten saddest anime deaths after all it took to get down here, Mikazuki lets him go. He follows after, closely at first until the other boy's feet are safe and flat on the earth.
Lingering there on the ramp, he takes a look at their surroundings before the comment reaches him. Blinking, he looks almost confused. ]
[ Right, but not just any pilot would have put up with his too-cheerful, completely-outside-his-element-because-holy-shit-what-is-technology self. Sorey feels like he just got a free crash course in piloting, all without crashing.
It's... kind of exhilarating, honestly? He feels like he's accomplished something noteworthy, at least. ]
You know, as strange as it sounds... [ turning back to Mikazuki with a tentative, but sincere smile ] ...I actually wouldn't mind doing that again sometime!
[ Better than expected, but maybe he should know that by now. In a small way, tucked close to his chest, he's not all that surprised. Gaze slipping away from Sorey, he considers the craft a moment, then faces forward again to move onto solid round. ]
I guess I could teach you more, someday.
[ ...possibly with a more stable ship, but he figures he doesn't need to say as much. ]
Really. [ He's resolute in this decision, not a shred of doubt to be found. ] If we're going to be here for a while, I might as well learn the tools of the trade, you know?
[ In other words, it's high time this boy gets properly introduced to technology -- beyond just texting.
There's a pause between Sorey's question and Mikazuki's answer, however, wherein he questions whether or not he should have asked someone, (anyone), to undertake the task of teaching him. It can't be easy, after all; not everyone has the patience for Sorey's level of newbie. Plus it's... kind of dangerous, honestly.
Really, really dangerous.
But that's all dismissed in the bat of an eye. ]
You will? [ For just a moment, he sounds like a kid all over again. Worse -- a kid who's just been told they can have ice cream for breakfast. ] Thanks, Mikazuki!
