Do you think so?

[ Mikazuki asks because he's never thought about it before. And he doesn't have to consciously think about it now because Sorey is here thinking and feeling it for him. Despite being naturally reticent, he's never been close-minded. Each ripple of emotion reaches him, reflective, mirroring back off of him in broad, gentle waves. Mikazuki wouldn't really know how to respond with words, but maybe that'll be good enough.

It's not like falling at all. When the ship pulls straight and the thrusters dull, the stars don't move much at all. They simply shine, suspended in that endless well of black. It's more like floating safely this way. Mikazuki wonders if he's ever looked at them like that.

Happy?

[ All at once, the tension in his body depresses, allowing him to lean back against the seat, head canting up. But for someone like Mikazuki, maybe that's more telling of a reaction than if he were to carry his tensions like normal, body ingrained with that need to be ready for anything.

Except this one thing. Is he happy?
]

I don't know.

[ An answer like that should be enough to drop anyone's gut more swiftly than the ship itself had. But there's nothing there that casts their emotional connection into shadows.

Just something a little nostalgic, an opportunity missed.

Is that it?

[ Did he seem happy? It both makes sense and doesn't that Sorey can feel something akin to his own happiness before he can. It's not something he consciously thinks about even when it's upon him, his nerves and synapses too long firing under fire to really grasp that emotion.

He's had a lot of things in his hands, but just as many have slipped through. Save this one thing, the way his grip tilts the controls too easily, like the ship itself is a second skin, unaffected by his mentality.

It's yawning and terrifyingly close to the surface, that space where all the things that living makes him feel should reside.
]

No, it's nothing.

I've been happy before.

[ That much he knows, though Mikazuki struggles to remember a time when he'd ever been content. There was always something that he was chasing over the horizon that kept him from settling into whatever happiness he'd find. Thinking about it leaves a strange glow in his eyes.

Even feeling it, that remembrance like a spark within the machine's blood and guts, is short-lived.

But not hidden.
]

It's always escaping us.

[ That's why his gaze is always forward. His footsteps, his flying. All forward. ]

[ That had only ever been his goal, right? Happiness — better beds, lots of food, work that sustained itself on something other than fighting. Mikazuki's happiness defaults never to himself but to them. Something so sharp and close that it wavers out of focus. A brief, fiery flash of sunlight against something steely white —

Mikazuki clicks the controls aside, pitching the ship out of that mental orbit. It's a surprisingly strict motion.
]

Yeah, but it's fine.

[ That's how it is. He's alive and living with it. He angles the ship towards the planet.

There's places he has yet to see.

[ That thought hits him like a shot to a shield. It may not damage, but he feels it all the same.

It's strange to him that the force of his thoughts don't come up against something immovable and harsh but something strangely stable in its acceptance. He's so used to the fundamental differences between himself and the concept of everyone else that he doesn't think to immediately accept it in kind, like he does with so many other things.

The ship begins to heat as it hurtles downward, scraping atmosphere. Mikazuki's grip stays the same, though his attention is contrarily stuck between the windshield and the boy at his side.

Understand what?

Oh.

[ There's no fight or disapproval in that singular noise, like he sees what Sorey's talking about but has no strong opinion on it one way or the other. Something else is swiftly overtaking his attention, making his gaze pierce as it settles just beyond the windshield.

With that, his arms lock on the controls as if he's holding something that's alive at bay.
]

I'd brace before we break through.

[ Break through what?

The protective barrier of the planet as it superheats around them, causing the ship to shudder violently in a halo of red. Soon, the noise.

Through the atmosphere. Gravity will try to tear the ship apart, sometimes.

[ His tone remains even, just loud enough to cut above the roaring of the ship's underbelly being battered by the atmosphere in question. But he's done this before, the impassivity on his face about as comforting as he's going to get about it. ]

What you're doing is enough.

[ Keeping calm and balanced. It's what Mikazuki would do too, content to work by himself at the forefront of an effort, no matter what he has to endure. It's less distrust for Sorey and more just what he defaults to in the scheme of things — all of his comrades had always put their bodies on the line for what they needed and had to do, Mikazuki simply puts his body on the line for them. For all his focus on fighting as a means to an end, it's selfless.

It's strange to feel someone's breathing more than hearing it, but it helps. Giving the controls a touch, Mikazuki sets his posture.
]

Let's go.

[ The ship begins to stop coasting and angles more into a crash against the atmosphere, swallowed by its resistance in a blinding flash of heat and smoke. It seems to take forever to grind through, the shaking and noise heightening to a deafening level.

At the end of it, though, there's a color daze. Red and black to white and green, a dramatic shift that has them careening down through cloud-cover towards a sea so blue it aches.

[ Now that they've broken through to the planet, there's things to account for that hadn't been in the vacuum of space — wind and gravity, the beating of sunshine down through the windshield. So Mikazuki doesn't let up on his intensity as he pushes the craft down through the new resistances. ]

Yeah, it is.

[ He's always thought so, though he'd never really had the luxury of stopping to admire it. Everything he feels now is run-off from Sorey, but he doesn't mind.

Before long, he's wheeled the craft down in a clearing near one of Wyver's many bodies of water. It'll be easier to navigate from there. Landing the ship is almost gentle in comparison to the ride itself, letting him display a soft touch, even if it's influenced by the machine. Once resting, he sets the controls and unbuckles himself to approach Sorey.
]

Here. [ A hand. ] Watch when you stand.

[ All those emotions pitch against something stark and empty, the space where a home would be had it not been torn away, right through his fingers. That brief, final pang of homesickness is a feeling Mikazuki doesn't recognize for what it is. It forms like the surge of a wave and pulls away just as quickly, washed through him without truly finding a place to stick, to overcome for more than a fleeting moment.

Which is why he can focus on what's tangible versus what never has been for him, things like hands on his shoulders. On instinct, he reaches out to steady Sorey there, looking down between them.
]

Yeah. If you're not used to going from space to gravity, it can end up like this. Are you okay?

[ A deliberating hum lingers in his throat. With that, his gaze flicks back up, no worse for wear. ]

It depends, but... [ Well, they're on the ground now, so even if Sorey does almost take a spill, it should be fine with him looking out for him still, right? ] You can hang onto me for a while if you want.

[ But they should get a move on. ]

[ Once it's guaranteed that Sorey isn't going to take a topple down the ramp and make the top ten saddest anime deaths after all it took to get down here, Mikazuki lets him go. He follows after, closely at first until the other boy's feet are safe and flat on the earth.

Lingering there on the ramp, he takes a look at their surroundings before the comment reaches him. Blinking, he looks almost confused.
]

It's nothing.

[ That's what pilots do? ]
